US Ambassador Richard Mills hails infrastructure, security and reform progress, in Abia State under the leadership of Governor Alex Otti,  pledges deeper US-Abia partnership.

The United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, has commended Abia State Governor Alex Otti for what he called a transformative leadership style, describing it as a model for improving governance and attracting investment.

Mills made the remarks on Friday evening during a visit to Otti’s residence in Nvosi, Abia State. He highlighted significant progress under the governor’s administration, particularly in infrastructure development, security, and economic reform.

“Your leadership in Abia has brought real change here — positive change,” Mills said. “Your focus on infrastructure and addressing security challenges has really transformed the state.”

The ambassador said the United States sees tremendous opportunities in Abia State and the wider Southeast region, signaling Washington’s interest in deeper engagement. He noted that Otti’s push for transparency, youth empowerment, and economic development aligns closely with what US businesses expect when considering investment opportunities.

“Your administration’s commitment to fostering economic growth, empowering youth, and creating a more transparent and accountable government really aligns very closely with our goals — and with what U.S. business needs to see if it’s going to invest,” he added.

Governor Otti, in his response, described the ambassador’s visit as a mark of confidence in his administration’s efforts to reposition Abia as a hub for business and innovation.

“We know that it’s not always that the American government visits a state. It’s a mark of endorsement as far as we are concerned here,” Otti said.

The governor outlined ongoing reforms in healthcare, education, waste management, and digital technology, stressing that Abia remains the “SME capital of Nigeria” and is well positioned to partner with US investors.

He also addressed his administration’s efforts to ensure fiscal accountability, including a forensic audit of the previous government’s finances.

“We are not interested in witch-hunting; we just needed to know where we were and how our resources in the last few years were used,” Otti explained, noting that the audit’s findings had led to several public disclosures.

The visit underscores growing US interest in state-level partnerships within Nigeria, as Washington seeks to expand trade and investment opportunities across the country. Abia’s reforms and Otti’s leadership have earned recognition both locally and internationally, positioning the state as an emerging destination for foreign investment and development initiatives.
